To kick off the April challenge for GlobalGiving, Youth Journalism International is holding a free, public reception from 2 to 4:30 p.m. on Saturday at the Mark Twain House & Museum in Hartford. We’d love to have anyone stop by and meet some of our students, including a few far away via the magic of Skype, and to learn more about the great work that YJI has been doing with talented young people around the globe for many years.
We promise a good time — these young folks pretty much assure it — and a chance to see the museum dedicated to an American journalist who made his mark on history. There’s also a terrific exhibit right now showcasing Norman Rockwell’s work relating to Twain, a pretty sweet side bonus.
We’re humbled and grateful that the Twain House made a second floor classroom space available for us — just ask at the desk when you come in. We’re also thankful that Trader Joe’s, Big Y World Class Market and Hall’s Market in West Hartford have donated to make sure there’s a little to eat and drink while you’re there. Hubbard’s Florist in Bristol contributed a gorgeous bouquet, too.
The Mark Twain House has long been a focus of attention for YJI writers who live in the area or who come to visit. Here, for example, is a photo from a few years back of YJI writers Teague Neal of Toronto and Zach Brokenrope of Aurora, Nebraska during their trip to the historic home:
Back in 2004, YJI writers Katie Jordan and Joe Keo, who are pictured above on the left, wrote extensively about the Twain House, which they dubbed “an awesome crib.”
